Salonika 1916 :How the British became players in a Greek tragedy

While the main part of Kitchener’s army was being slaughtered on the Somme, Britain in 1916 was becoming embroiled in another foreign adventure in the foothills of Macedonia. Barbed wire in place of today’s razor wire, the almost forgotten Great War story of ‘the gardeners of Salonika’ was in fact only a prelude to an unfolding Greek tragedy. At the centre of these events was the great, magnificently multicultural Aegean port of Salonika – a city which would not only be turned upside down by the influx of Allied soldiers but which in a matter of a few years would also become ‘a city of refugees’.

As usual entrance is free, and refreshments are available.
