17th April = The Battles of Fulford and Stamford Bridge

Never before, or since, has this kingdom faced invasion by two different foes on two separate fronts at the same time, in fact, 1066 was indeed a pivotal time, it is a certainly a year of ‘what if’ and ‘if only’.

Battle at Stamford Bridge. Harold Godwinson’s Final Victory001

This short illustrated talk covers the events in the north before the Battle of Hastings. We tend to call the event in September ‘the forgotten battles’, because history is always written by the victors and the two battles in Yorkshire were conveniently passed over by the Normans. However, as I will show, these two massive battles had a knock-on effect, without which the final battle of 1066 could have been a totally different result, and thus a totally different history to what we know now.

Stamford Bridge was the last gasp of the Saxon kingdom, and its kings’ last brilliant military victory, – it is something we should never forget.

The Battle of Stamford Bridge Heritage Society (BOSBHS) was formed to commemorate, celebrate and promote The Battle of Stamford Bridge 1066 and the Viking and Saxon era of 8-11th Century. The society has recently expanded it’s aims to examine the history, archaeology and social events of Stamford Bridge as a whole.

In 2016 the society organised a major event to commemorate the 950th anniversary of the battle, photographs of this hugely successful event can be seen on the Gallery page. The battle weekend was also a fitting tribute to Tom Wyles who we sadly lost last year and a great achievement for everyone who was involved in the organisation.

The society holds monthly talks, meetings and visits throughout the year as well as attending many local events, often in period costume. Major projects include the creation of “The Stamford Bridge Tapestry” to rival those of Bayeux and Fulford and an exploration of the archaeology of Stamford Bridge.
